Laboratory consumables for handling and reconstituting research peptides. A lyophilised peptide is a dry powder, and it has to be brought into solution before it can be used in any assay, so the diluent and the handling technique matter as much as the compound itself.

Bacteriostatic water is water for injection containing 0.9 percent benzyl alcohol as a preservative. The preservative is what allows a vial to be entered more than once over a working period without the solution becoming a growth medium, which is why it is the usual choice for laboratory work that runs across several days rather than a single session.

Not every peptide dissolves readily in water. Sequences that are strongly hydrophobic or that carry a net negative charge at neutral pH often need a small volume of dilute acetic acid first, and a few need an organic solvent.
